Job Announcement: Development Director

Hesperian, nonprofit publisher of Where There Is No Doctor and other resources for grassroots health programs worldwide, is looking for a Development Director to lead our fundraising efforts, including Individual Giving and Foundation & Institutional Fundraising programs. Combining elements of both a small press and a solidarity organization, Hesperian collaborates internationally with health workers and grassroots groups to develop materials for community-based health care that are accessible, medically complete, and look at political, social, and economic causes of poor health. Comprehensive, empowering, and easy-to-use, Hesperian materials promote self-reliance and self-determination, by providing communities with the basic information that they need to improve their own health conditions. Our publications (including those in development) address environmental health, export processing zone worker health and safety, HIV/AIDS, women's health, midwifery, community mental health, women with disabilities, children with disabilities, health worker training, and dentistry. Our materials have been translated into more than 100 different languages, and are used in resource-poor communities worldwide.

Summary of the position:
Hesperian seeks a Development Director to manage and support the development of our growing fundraising team and lead Hesperian’s fundraising activities. Hesperian’s fundraising program raises an average of $1.4 million annually from private foundations, other institutional donors (including bilateral agencies) and from individuals. The Development Director (new position) will join a team that includes an Individual Giving Program Manager, a Foundation Manager and a Development Associate (new position).

We seek a proven manager and team builder with a successful track record in all aspects of fundraising— strategic planning for fundraising programs, building individual donor programs, proposal writing and editing, and in-person solicitations. This is a full-time position and reports to the Executive Director.

Our plans for the next few years include strengthening systems and staffing structure to ensure that the fundraising program is sustainable as well as securing the financial health of the organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Fundraising Strategy and Planning: 40%

  • Develop and revise strategy for annual fundraising plans (prospecting institutions and individual giving campaigns), in coordination with the Executive Director and fundraising staff
  • Provide input and feedback to the Executive Director and senior management team in developing program planning and operational budgets
  • Monitor and report on progress of fundraising activities throughout the year, and alert the Executive Director of any need for modification of fundraising goals or strategies
  • Support fundraising staff to prepare budgets for all development activities, monitor budgets during year
  • Coordinate with the Board Fundraising Committee to support and engage the Board of Directors in fundraising; act as a liaison with the Board Fundraising Committee

Direct Fundraising: 45%
  • Oversee the development of proposals, reports, and other correspondence for institutional funders (i.e., government, foundations, corporations)
  • Oversee the development of fundraising activities targeted to individual donors (e.g., special events, annual appeals, e- newsletter and direct mailings)
  • Ensure individual donors and foundations are cultivated and stewarded appropriately, whether through direct personal contact, board members or staff
  • Represent organization at philanthropic-related events and meetings
  • Identify, initiate contact, and cultivate new institutional and major donor relationships
  • Solicit selected major donors and support staff and board members in doing so

Supervisory Responsibilities: 15%
  • Lead a development team of three: Individual Giving Program Manager,Foundation Manager and a Development Associate (new position)
  • Oversee development staff, including development of job descriptions, hiring, training, and annual evaluations

QUALIFICATIONS
  • More than four years experience in fundraising with a demonstrated track record of success
  • Demonstrated fundraising leadership ability
  • Two or more years of supervisory experience
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
  • B.A./B.S degree, with graduate degree preferred, in international relations, environmental science, communications or a related field
  • Available to travel 10 percent of the time

  • Proven ability to work with and supervise a team of fundraising colleagues
  • Experience managing a program that includes income from both individuals and foundation grants
  • Enthusiasm for Hesperian’s work, mission and philosophy
  • Excellent relational and communication skills (both oral and written)
  • Health or international development experience strongly preferred
  • Prior experience living and working overseas a plus

40 hours per week (100% FTE)

We are seeking to build our growing individual donor base and support our institutional fundraising program to strengthen our long-term financial stability. The Development Associate, a new position, will join our fundraising team which currently includes an Individual Giving Program Manager and a Foundation Manager. The Development Associate will report primarily to the Individual Giving Program Manager and collaborate with her on fundraising strategies for the Individual Giving Fundraising Team.

Primary responsibilities

Individual Giving Program

  • Plan and execute 3-4 appeals (large and smaller) and at least 1 prospect mailing per year, including related phone banks
  • Help to organize and manage house parties and book-related events
  • Manage online distribution of quarterly E-Newsletter and other web outreach to donors
  • Manage the Gifts of Health program
  • Help to coordinate the Annual Report and other fundraising and outreach materials
  • Database maintenance and accurate entry of data. Process donations and ensure timely acknowledgment of donations by letter and telephone
  • Support the Individual Giving Program Manager in major donor cultivation
  • Help supervise volunteers, interns, and/or work-study students in this department

Foundation/Institutional Program

  • Track grants calendar
  • Assist with reporting on grants awarded
  • Maintain foundation files
  • Manage family foundation giving program

Support to Fundraising Team

  • Maintain database of quotes about Hesperian materials
  • Participate in overall fundraising team strategy development

Other duties relating to the Hesperian Foundation’s organizational life may be added from time to time, on a temporary or permanent basis, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Self-motivated, self-directed and able to work independently with minimal supervision as well as ease in working collaboratively. Strong personal organization and initiative, with proven success at managing multiple projects and relationships
  • Experience with systems and databases, especially Filemaker Pro and experience with coordinating large mailings using mail merge with Word and Excel
  • Excellent writing skills
  • One to three years of non-profit fundraising experience
  • Commitment to, and understanding of, Hesperian’s mission, and enthusiasm for Hesperian’s work.

Other qualifications include:

  • Excellent relational and communication skills (both oral and written)
  • Experience working with volunteers and interns
  • Experience with major donor fundraising a plus
  • Community organizing, health, or international development experience a plus
  • Marketing, media and promotions experience a plus
  • Appetite for learning
  • Heart, humility and humor

Compensation:
Starting salary range $35,000-$39,000 FTE, depending on experience. Excellent benefits. This is a full-time fundraising position.

Job Announcement: Marketing and Publicity Coordinator

Hesperian is a nonprofit publisher of books and materials for community-based health care. Our books and materials address the underlying social, political, and economic causes of poor health, and suggest ways groups can organize to improve health conditions in their communities. They are used in marginalized communities around the world, including the United States. Our flagship publication, Where There Is No Doctor, is considered to be one of the most accessible and widely used community health books in the world.>/p>

Job Description:
Hesperian seeks a Marketing and Publicity Coordinator to promote the sale and distribution of Hesperian’s books and content. The Marketing and Publicity Coordinator will develop and carry out strategies to promote the distribution and sale of Hesperian publications through electronic promotion, direct mailings, book reviews, conferences, advertising, and targeted correspondence. The Marketing and Publicity Coordinator supervises 2 to 5 interns and volunteers. This is a full-time position.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Write informational, sales and promotional materials such as short blogs, catalogues, fliers, announcements, etc
  • Manage all forms of outreach including: mailings, conferences, placed ads, etc
  • Plan and organize publicity campaigns for the release of new books
  • Manage promotion-related information on Hesperian’s website and strategies to drive traffic to the site
  • Participate in a Web Team to develop and extend our presence on the web through Hesperian's website as well other networking and outreach sites
  • Generate, analyze and track data and sales reports for promotional and re-print planning purposes
  • Work with the Fulfillment Team to generate sales and increase book revenues

Qualifications:
  • Prior experience managing outreach or publicity campaigns and demonstrated ability to write promotional materials is essential
  • Proven ability to manage multi-faceted projects is required
  • Spanish language is strongly recommended
  • Experience managing staff or volunteers is important
  • Understanding of the issues and politics surrounding community health is important

Compensation
The starting salary range for this position is $36,000 to $44,000 depending on skills and experience. Excellent benefits.
