Hesperian Images allows you to search, download, and save images from our books – select from more than 10,000 images!
In order to download and save images, you will be asked to sign in to Hesperian Images – the process is quick and easy, and it’s free! After signing in, you will be able to download up to 5 full-sized images a month for free. You will also be able to organize and save your favorite images in a special folder called a ‘lightbox’. If you would like to download more than 5 images per month during this trial period, please write to images@hesperian.org about your experience using Hesperian Images, including information about how and where you are using the images you have downloaded and why you would like to have access to more images (what projects or materials you would use them for and how they would benefit your organization’s work).
Although the images are watermarked on screen, after signing in they will download without the watermark.
Search
You can search Hesperian Images by typing words in the General Library Search box. You will find this in the upper right hand corner of every page. All images in the database are tagged with specific words. If you do not find the images you are looking for, try using other words or synonyms. Click on ‘Help’ to learn how to use symbols (such as +, -, “ ”) to refine searches using multiple words.
TIP: To search by book title, chapter or page number, type the book title in the general search inside quotation marks (e.g. “Where There Is No Doctor”). If you would like to find a specific chapter of that book, type in the name of the book as described above, and then type in the chapter number inside another set of quotation marks (e.g. “Where There Is No Doctor” “chapter 6”). If you are looking for a specific page number, follow the same pattern (e.g. “Where There Is No Doctor” “page 13”
Uncheck the box “Only show exact matches” to search for images tagged with that exact word as well as images with tags that contain that word.
Select the ‘Advanced Search’ option underneath the search box to find images that meet specific criteria. Advanced Search lets you can choose which categories of information to search by, and allows you to add or remove as many conditions as you want.
Here is an example of an Advanced Search. To find an image of a group of people from Ecuador recycling trash, select the category Number of People. You will see a drop down menu appear on the right. Use that menu to choose Large Group (5 or more). Then click Add another condition and choose Ethnicity(ies). From the drop down menu on the right choose Latin American. Click Add another condition again and choose Keywords. In the field to the right type “recycling”. Then click SEARCH!
TIP: If you are looking for “woman” or “man” you will have to search by “female” or “male” and add an age (whether you are looking for an adult, a teenager, or an elder.) The same is true for “girl” or “boy.”
Once you’ve found the image that you want, you can download and save it for later. This can be done from either the thumbnail or full view of the image.
Download
To download an image, click the ‘Download ZIP’ button. If you are viewing the thumbnails page, select the image you want to download and click the ‘Download ZIP’ button above the thumbnails. If you are viewing the full image, you will see the ‘Download Image’ button under the image. Before you can download the image you will be required to enter your name, e-mail, and a brief description of how you will use the image. This will help us to learn about how our images are used, and in turn will help us to create better materials.
Save to a Lightbox
As you search for and find images, you can collect them in a folder called a ‘Lightbox’. You can see your Lightbox on the left-hand navigation bar below the navigation options.
To add images to a Lightbox from the thumbnails page, select the images you want to save and press ‘+ Add To Lightbox’. If you are already on the image page, click the plus sign to the right of the image.
You can create multiple Lightboxes. Add, delete, rename, and move between Lightboxes by pressing the expand arrow next to the name of the Lightbox you are currently viewing.
