Hesperian is pleased to announce the publication of the 2009 edition of Where There Is No Doctor. This brand new printing of our best known book contains new and updated information on: childhood vaccinations, HIV prevention and medicines, treating serious injuries, the resurgence of yaws, drug resistance and changes in STI and malaria medications, the differences in signs of heart attacks in women and men, asthma treatment, and much more.

Where There Is No Dentist - 2009 printing now available
Where There Is No Dentist, Hesperian’s newly updated companion book to Where There Is No Doctor, has arrived! This book encourages people to care for their teeth and gums. Given clear, simple instructions, ordinary people can -- and should -- take care of more common dental problems before they develop more serious problems requiring a dentist. Topics covered include dental exams, diagnosis of common dental complaints, making and using dental equipment, using local anesthetics, placing fillings, and removing teeth. This book also includes an updated presentation of issues related to HIV and oral health, as well as an updated resources section.
Hesperian’s Newest Spanish Language Title
Un manual de salud para mujeres con discapacidad, the Spanish edition of A Health Handbook for Women with Disabilities, arrived to our offices today and we are very excited to have this wonderful material now available in Spanish. Un manual de salud para mujeres con discapacidad will help women with disabilities overcome these barriers and improve their general health, self-esteem, and abilities to care for themselves and participate in their communities.
You can download Un manual de salud para mujeres con discapacidad from our downloads page or purchase it from our online bookstore.
Translations of our Newest Book!
Hesperian’s partners working in languages other than English were excited to receive A Community Guide to Environmental Health and many are now working to translate, adapt, and make its contents accessible in their communities.
Editions are currently planned and underway in many languages, including: Portuguese (for Mozambique); Bengali, Hindi, Oriya, Tamil, Telugu, and an English adaptation (all for India); Pashto and Urdu (for Pakistan); Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese, Mongolian, and Nepali; Swahili (for Tanzania); French (for West Africa); Bambarra and Peulh (for Mali); Chichewa (for Malawi); Russian and Kyrgyz (for Kyrgyzstan) and Polish – a first in that language for a Hesperian title!
Hesperian provides “seed grants”-- a small amount of financial support to these editions, and extends our technical support, encouragement and world-wide network of contacts to help our many partners, old and new, bring their editions into print (and onto the web!). We consider these editions to be among the most important forms of distribution in which we engage. The work of our translation partners will create more opportunities for community mobilization and change around issues of environmental health that are essential if humans are to find healthier, sustainable ways to live.
You Can Get Involved
There are many ways you can get involved and promote Health for All.
If you have a birthday, anniversary, or other special occasion coming up, ask your friends and family to give you a Gift of Health, which will send free life-saving health books in your name to a community that has requested them.
You can volunteer, donate or host a house party to introduce Hesperian to your friends and family.
If you have a blog or website, you can also post a free Hesperian Banner to your website to help raise awareness and support for Hesperian's work!
