Community Action for Women's Health and Empowerment
Every day, women around the world face violence, discrimination, and unnecessary risks to their health. Over the last 10 years, Hesperian’s Where Women Have No Doctor (WWHND), which has been translated into 35 languages, has helped community–based groups and health workers in poor and wealthy countries develop creative health education activities so women in difficult situations can gain access to the healthcare information they need and deserve.
Hesperian is now partnering with many of these groups and individuals to develop Community Action for Women's Health and Empowerment. This new Women’s Action Guide will be both a book and a web-based resource that will include examples of strategies and tools community-based organizations and individuals are using to make the information in WWHND easier to share.
To develop Community Action, we will work with groups from around the world who have expertise in particular areas of women’s health care, many of whom have been involved in the development of other Hesperian books. This will ensure accurate, relevant and culturally sensitive information on:
- HIV
- family planning
- nutrition
- refugees
- sexuality
- gender roles
- mental health
The approaches collected in this new resource will support women’s empowerment around the world as health workers, community organizers and others strive to promote gender equity and women’s health.
