Development Director

Summary of Position:

Hesperian seeks a dynamic Development Director to lead our fundraising team! As the Development Director, you will work closely with 3 fundraising team members (Development Associate, Grant Writer, and Manager of Individual Giving) plus the Executive Director and Board of Directors to reach Hesperian’s annual fundraising goal of $1.4 million through individual major gifts, corporate donors, and foundation grants.

Our ideal candidate is an experienced fundraising professional with a proven track record of success with both foundation fundraising and major gifts from individuals. This full-time position reports to the Executive Director, serves on Hesperian’s senior management team, participates in meetings with the Board of Directors, and leads its Fund Development Committee.



The Development Director will spend an estimated 60% time on direct fundraising and 40% on fundraising strategy, planning and management.  Key responsibilities:

  • Lead and actively participate in the identification, cultivation, solicitation and management of a portfolio of foundation and other institutional funding sources.
  • Oversee individual major donor program and support Manager of Individual Giving with a focus on increasing gifts, developing new major gift opportunities, and expanding individual donor base.
  • Coordinate overall philanthropic outreach strategy – including events – and represent Hesperian at community events and meetings.
  • Ensure appropriate messaging and regular communications for stewardship of existing individual donors and foundations staff.
  • Ensure clear and persuasive proposals, LOIs, concept notes, short pitches, and appeal letters are produced by the fundraising team with program staff input.
  • Develop annual fundraising plans, in coordination with the Executive Director and fundraising staff, including strategies and goals for acquiring, renewing and generating increased support from foundations and individuals. Evaluate the effectiveness of those plans.
  • Member of the senior management team; participate in developing program planning and operational budgets.
  • Coordinate and work with the Board of Directors to support fundraising efforts; lead meetings of the Fund Development Committee (board members and advisors).
  • Create work plans and effective systems to ensure that monthly and quarterly fundraising activities are implemented to meet annual goals.
  • Supervise a team of 3 fundraising staff, as well as volunteers and interns.



  • Five or more years of nonprofit fundraising experience; at least two years spent managing a team of professional staff preferred.
  • Strong writing skills and demonstrated ability to write and edit persuasive philanthropic copy.
  • Proven track record of achieving revenue targets (foundation grants and major gifts). Experience developing and managing fundraising goals and work plans to achieve them.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience with outreach, cultivation, and relationship-building with new foundations and individual donors.
