Local partnerships are central to Hesperian’s mission of making health information accessible to all. We are grateful to ESTAMOS and all of the partners who have been instrumental in translating our health resources into over 85 languages for communities around the globe.

The Portuguese translation increases access to life-saving information for individuals and reproductive health workers.
Birth workers around the world have expressed appreciation for the ways that A Book for Midwives and the Safe Pregnancy and Birth app support their work: “Hesperian’s materials have helped me so much as a midwife,” says Awori Diana, who works in Family Medical Point’s maternity unit in Uganda. Awori adds that the app supports self-reliance, because “the women I support are able to manage more on their own without traveling to (a medical) facility.”
Recently, Hesperan translators Alda do Rosário Elias Mariano and Julie Cliff helped adapt the information in the Safe Pregnancy and Birth app for a Portuguese version. With easily understood information on pregnancy, labor, and birth, this app supports birth workers, midwives, and people seeking to understand all stages of pregnancy. Every new translation is a celebration of health empowerment, supporting informed care by providing access to easy-to-understand health information. The Read Aloud feature and other helpful in-app tools broadens its audience and accessibility immensely.
We are partnering with ESTAMOS, a Mozambican NGO, to user-test this brand new version. ESTAMOS previously partnered with Hesperian to provide feedback and Portuguese translation for A Community Guide to Environmental Health. We look forward to incorporating their feedback, as well as hearing from Portuguese-speaking communities around the globe.
Please share the news about this update and remember to download or update the app on your mobile device. If you are using Safe Pregnancy & Birth with Portuguese speakers, please tell us about your experience at [email protected].
The Safe Pregnancy and Birth app is available in English, Spanish, French, Kiswahili, and Portuguese.
